Replacing of climbing rubber

We remove the old sole and replace it with new rubber of your choice. On older climbing shoe designs that use a single piece of sole rubber running from toe to heel (e.g. La Sportiva Katana, Miura and Mythos), we replace only the front half. On newer designs with a shaped sole (e.g. Solution, Skwama and Otaki), we replace the entire piece of sole rubber with a new one cut to the original shape.

 

Note: Resoling with specialty Ratom rubber costs more due to the higher price of the material.

You don’t need to add disinfection to your order. We disinfect every pair of climbing shoes at no extra charge before repair, using a Klenz ozone disinfection unit. The process is safe for the shoes and eliminates bacteria and other microorganisms that can cause unpleasant odours and health problems. For hygiene reasons, disinfection is a mandatory part of every repair.

Even if you cannot see a hole in the rand rubber, it may still need to be replaced. We can only assess this after removing the sole and carefully inspecting the condition of the climbing shoe. You therefore do not need to order this service separately. If you believe the rand rubber on your climbing shoes needs to be replaced, we will almost certainly reach the same conclusion. Conversely, if replacement is necessary, we cannot repair the shoes without it, even if you would prefer us not to. You will simply need to leave this decision to us.

For your information – we always replace rand rubber previously fitted by another repair shop, regardless of its condition.

The rand rubber is subjected to the most wear at the front, around the toe of the climbing shoe. If the rand is not yet completely worn through but is too thin to withstand another resole, we will repair it using the toe-cap technique rather than replace the entire rand. This repair is less expensive, has less impact on the shape of the shoe and causes less wear to its underlying material. We explain this lesser-known technique in more detail in this article. If, despite its advantages, you would prefer us to replace the entire rand rubber even if toe-cap would be applicable, select this option when placing your order.

Between the sole rubber and the structural material of the climbing shoe (natural or synthetic leather) is a thin thermoplastic layer called the midsole. It helps maintain the shoe’s downturned shape and adds overall stiffness. Over time, it can become damaged or crack. In older shoe constructions, where it is not covered by a layer of rubber, it can also be damaged when the sole is removed. For replacements, we use original LaspoFlex material, which is used in La Sportiva’s higher-end models.

If the toe of the climbing shoe is worn to the point that there is also a hole in the shoe’s structural material (the natural or synthetic leather beneath the rubber), we must patch it before applying new rubber. You would otherwise be able to feel the hole beneath your big toe. The upper material is approximately 2 mm thick, so leaving the hole unpatched would create a noticeable depression after the new sole is applied, negatively affecting its shape. Depending on the type of damage, the hole must therefore be repaired by gluing or stitching.

Stitching a worn-through, unstitched or torn Velcro strap; replacing or restitching a heel pull tab; replacing a Velcro strap with a metal buckle; and similar repairs. If you would like any stitching done, mention it in the order notes. We do not carry out stitching automatically. If we find damage that requires stitching and you have not left a note, we will contact you to discuss it individually.

A common problem with La Sportiva climbing shoes that use a thin closure strap, such as the Solution, Solution Comp and Futura, is that the strap eventually wears through. We can replace the worn strap with a new yellow-and-black one of the type used on the Solution.

Some climbing shoes have a thin rubber scum patch over the instep for protection and more effective toe hooking. On request and subject to the availability of replacement parts, we can replace it with a new one. If you are interested, mention it in the order notes or contact us.

We do not charge for minor re-gluing of the original rand rubber, scum patch (protective rubber over the instep) or heel. However, if the entire climbing shoe is coming apart, as happens relatively often with the La Sportiva Tarantula, we will charge an additional minor-repair fee due to the time required. If you send us a climbing shoe specifically to have detached sections re-glued but do not yet want the sole replaced, mention this in the order notes and we will charge only for a minor repair.

Other minor repairs that do not fall into any of the categories above. For example, replacing the entire sole all the way to the heel, repairing cracked rubber on the side of the climbing shoe, and similar work.

We stock original La Sportiva replacement laces for climbing shoes. If your laces are worn through and you would like a new pair, mention it in the order notes. As with stitching, if you do not leave a note but we notice that your laces are worn, we will contact you by email and offer you a replacement pair.
